Dorothy L. Sayers' Lord Peter mysteries are some of the best ever written. The Nine Tailors, Murders Must Advertise and the books in the series where Lord Peter meets the love of his life: Strong Poison, Have His Carcase, and Gaudy Night and Busman's Honeymoon, as well as the Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club. These are well written books, with well-developed characters, and a strong dose of wit make these books still hugely popular 70-80 years after they were written! Lord Peter's "man", Bunter, makes Jeeves look like an also ran. Bunter has the same magic that Jeeves has, but he's human and cares very deeply for Lord Peter, who he served under during World War I. The Nine Tailors is generally considered to be one of the best mystery stories ever written, But avoid the Five Red Herrings! A poor effort, but much effort was put into it. It just makes me crazy trying to keep up with the details of an insanely complex murder. It's the only Lord Peter that I don't like, and it took 3-4 readings before I was able to admit it was too much work to read, The Lord Peter Short Stories are also delightful; he usually falls into conversation with an fellow traveler, and in the course of their conversation, solves the person's mystery. Lord Peter is a delightful aristocrat (younger brother to a duke) who dismays his family (mostly his sister in law - the duchess) by his dabbling in murder mysteries (consultant to the police) and other such lowly occupations. I also find Margery Allingham's Albert Campion books well worth my time, and Ellis Peter's Brother Cadfael books - 21 of them - are like fine art works. They benefit from spending time and taking in all the details. I used to skip over when Brother Cadfael traveled from one place to another, until about the third time through the books I discovered what I had been missing - little gems planted throughout the books. Dorothy Sayers books came recently into Kindle form, and I keep waiting and hoping to find Brother Cadfael in Kindle editions.

I love Dorothy Sayers' writing and will continue reading the Lord Peter Wimsey series. The setting is a seaside watering place in England, with greed and vanity and spite at work behind the scenes. Harriet (colleague and semi-romantic-interest of Lord PW) happens upon a body and things ensue from there. It's a confounding mystery, the worst Lord Wimsey has ever grappled with, in his own words. I agree with the other 3-star reviews that it's a good book but it drags out forever. A little too much dithering (could be this, could be that, but on the other hand ...) and a lot of red herrings.
Anyone lessons these mysteries terribly overly complex? And a bit verbose? The characters are wonderful but the plots are so very complicated. Perhaps I'm just used to the kind that end all in a satisfying denouement...these seem more like logic problems in a puzzle book, like the reader is actually expected to pull it their little notebook and do ciphers along with the characters. Also...even in the 30s and 40s, surely people didn't go about committing suicide by cutting their throats? Especially not all the way through the trachea?
Though I eagerly awaited the editions of Dorothy Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey/Harriet Vane novels, which are favorites of mine, the enormous number of typos make for laborious and irritating reading, with multiple errors per page. Indeed, were I not already intimate with the books, some passages woud make no sense as transcribed my familiarity allows me to decode the errors. For ten dollars a book, , your readers deserve better.
The book itself is literate and serves well to advance the relationship between the two main characters. From first book to last, Sayers' style develops from superficial to highly reflective and deeply emotional.
This is the second Lord Peter mystery in which Harriet Vane appears. (The first was Strong Poison). The introduction of an important female charachter represents a major shift in the tone of the series. Rumor is that Sayers got tired of Lord Peter in his happy go lucky batchelor mode and wanted to drop him. He was too popular. She couldn't. do it. . Instead she made him into a more solid, serious character capable of developing serious relationships with someone other than his valet. At this point the books began to be novels rather than simple who dunnits. Thee characters become more complex as the series goes on. There is still bloody murder however and its a treat for readers who like intricate puzzles.

Ms Sayers was a scholar, a master of composition, a superior and cunning planner of plots and dastardly deeds. She was a contemporary of Agatha Christi, Margery Allingham and Ngaio Marsh, the women who dominated the field of detective stories during the period between the 1930'sand the 1960's, but it is she who has always been defined as the Queen of mystery writers. Have His Carcase was published after Strong Poison and is a continuation of the story of Lord Peter Wimsey and the woman whose life he saved and whom he is continuing to court unsuccessfully. The story is told from the viewpoint of Harriet Vane, who, while on a walking tour, finds a dead body on a rock by the sea. While she is searching for a telephone to call the police (remember, no cell phones in those days) the body is washed away by the turn of the tide with no evidence of its existence other than a roll of photographs taken by Harriet. She is joined by Lord Peter Wimsey, and working together with the local police they uncover a startling fact which negates iron-clad alibis and leads to the arrest of the killer. This book is for readers who appreciate well written, well plotted stories with believable characters.
