This is a great book - well-researched, interesting, funny and incisive, but without being strident or nasty. Crabb thoroughly dissects a range of factors that may contribute to the differences in outcomes for men and women in the workplace, without pointing fingers or slapping blame at any particular group's feet and while managing to retain her sense of humour. Yet, she still manages to make a very good case that the workplace in Australia is not equal, and that this is largely because the society and our homes are still far from equal. This book is easy to read, and laugh out loud funny in some places, but also truly thought provoking. Well done, Annabel Crabb! I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in equality and Australian society generally.Product details

An interesting way to look at how marriage changes the life of men & women. Annabel Crabb looks at the impact of having a life partner on both men & women, & how things haven't really changed as much as we think they have
Statistics are provided along with pithy commentary that turns what could be boring into something that keeps you reading.
The author takes us on a whirlwind tour if what has, and more alarmingly has not, changed about family gender roles in Australia in the last few decades. An interesting read for those working and especially those interested in rebalancing gender representation in the workforce.
This book will hit true for every woman who has ever juggled work, motherhood and wifedom. An excellent read filled with humour and intelligent thought, loved every bit of it.
Enlightening, laugh aloud in public entertaining and incredibly well-researched and thought through. loved it. loved it. loved it. Completely turned upside down and inside out my thinking on work in today's world. I highly recommend for parents, employers, those working at home and those working at work. Most importantly... for those starting out on their life journey of career, marriage family (or some combination of the above) and who, like the rest of us did, want to attack this family-work-life balance thing in a different way.
It needed to be said, and it's really simple when you get down to it - why women don't have the same rate of success as men in their careers comes down to the fact that we don't have a wife at home, we are being obliged to fulfil the wife role AND the career whereas male competitors have a wife and therefore can focus more on their careers. The sooner this is accepted and acknowledged the sooner the workplace can become a fairer environment for women.
First I must admit to admiring Annabel Crabb's contributions to the Australian political landscape for many years now. I have enjoyed her calm, rational & even handed approach to topics which usually generate debate amongst interested parties.
I found the book thought provoking (hence the title given to this review) & written in a "comfortable" style that matches the author's personality. Frank, openminded, explorative, non-accusatory, & sprinkled with appropriate humour...what more can one ask for from an author?
The author doesn't contend to have all the answers, but as with any meaningful written piece it is more the review of the status quo & the generation of ideas which can then act as a catalyst for a dialectic discussion that matters.
My only critique is that there were so many references to this study & that study that, for this dopey brain at least, I started to lose the trees in the woods. But this is only a minor critique.
The revelation of the book? That there is a Geena Davis Institute on Genda in Media. Who would of thought?
Buy, read, digest & enjoy.
I’m a fan of Annabel Crabb’s work. Somehow she manages to funny and serious at the same time. Kitchen Cabinet is a case in point.
The Wife Drought is another example. Annabel deals with the serious topics of equity, relationships, raising of children and work life in a light way. She makes the point that modern life is complex but we all benefit by accepting change.
And, no one should be surprised by Penny Wong’s notes...
