An award-winning story from Writers of the Future...
For Benjas, a mercenary mage, finding the next Key is an important contract with great consequences. For Cassandra, a fanatical warrior, it's the quest of a zealot. Secrets and fears pile up between them until success becomes more dangerous than failure, and only the Key can separate victors from victims.
Includes a preview of the epic fantasy novel, Sword and Chant.
The Key eBook Blair MacGregor
There are some good ideas about a society where leadership is divided between mages and soldiers, but I found all three major characters to be 2-dimensional. Yes, Cassie is supposed to be a member of a rigidly ruled military and Benjas a 'mercenary mage', but there wasn't enough information about WHY mages and military developed as they did. Surely another page or two of development wouldn't be too much to ask. There are some nice touches - how the Key learns his/her duties and prerogatives, the physical price of magic and how to keep from being questioned by a superior. Of course, vomiting in front of said superior may not work for most of us readers......
Editing was good - no obvious grammar/spelling/homophone errors. However, editing is also supposed to keep a good 'flow' to the text and keep characterization realistic. I found it lacking on both accounts.
I got this short story in a package Kindle deal along with the same author's Sword and Chant. Unfortunately I found the same problems in the longer novel which I found too tedious to finish reading.
